Grey's Anatomy Season 22: Amelia's Sabbatical and Caterina Scorsone's Hiatus (2025)

Major spoiler alert for Grey's Anatomy fans! If you're not caught up on Season 21, you might want to turn back now. For those who are ready, buckle up because a beloved character is taking a significant break from the show.

In a shocking turn of events in the Season 21 finale, the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial were left reeling after a devastating explosion. The impact hit Amelia Shepherd (played by Caterina Scorsone) particularly hard, as the explosion was caused by the mother of her patient, Dylan. Despite attempts by Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Maggie (Kelly McCreary) to help her cope, Amelia announced she would be taking a sabbatical at the end of Episode 2202, titled "We Built This City."

This break means a lengthy hiatus for Scorsone, a long-standing member of the Grey's Anatomy cast. Sources indicate she will be absent for the next eight episodes, with her return expected in 2026.

This decision aligns with a cost-saving measure implemented by the show starting in the 2024-25 season. Veteran cast members now have minimum guarantees for 14 out of the 18 episodes per season. And this is the part most people miss... This change allows for cast members to appear in fewer episodes throughout the season.

For the 2025-26 season, the veteran cast will follow the 14 out of 18 episode rule, except for Scorsone, who will appear in 10 out of 18 episodes. This reduction is woven into Amelia's storyline, with her sabbatical explaining her absence.

But here's where it gets controversial... This move is specific to this season. Scorsone remains a series regular, and Amelia, a fan favorite since Season 7 (after her debut on Private Practice), is deeply connected to the show's core as Derek Shepherd's sister and Meredith's sister-in-law.

In an interview after the Season 21 finale, Grey's Anatomy executive producer/showrunner Meg Marinis discussed the plans for Amelia in Season 22, especially after she wasn't given much to do last season. Marinis noted that Amelia's focus on medical cases might change after the events involving Dylan.

Amelia's emotional turmoil stems from blaming herself for what happened to Dylan, including the death of her friend, Dr. Monica Beltran. Compounding her grief, Dylan remains awake but locked in her body after two surgeries, facing a life in long-term care.
